Selective pallet rack

How it works

Forklifts place pallets onto beams or decking from the aisle. Each position is individually accessible. FIFO is possible through stock management; the rack does not enforce it.

  1. Lift the pallet in the aisle
  2. Place it on the shelf
  3. Lift clear of the supports
  4. Retrieve the same pallet

Advantages

  • Direct access to each pallet
  • Accommodates many SKUs
  • Adjustable beam levels

Considerations

  • More aisle space than deep-lane storage
  • Lower storage density than compact systems

Load fit

Match pallet dimensions and condition to the beam/deck support. Check each load’s weight and height against the configured bay and handling equipment.

Best for: Mixed products, frequent access, changing inventory.

How it works

Cartons enter the higher rear end of an inclined wheel track and advance toward the picking face. Loading and picking use opposite aisles, maintaining first-in, first-out rotation within a lane.

  1. Replenish the rear of the lane
  2. Gravity advances the cartons
  3. Pick the oldest carton first
  4. The next carton rolls forward

Advantages

  • FIFO rotation within each lane
  • Separate replenishment and picking
  • Stock advances to the pick face

Considerations

  • Needs access on both sides
  • Track setup depends on the container

Load fit

Use cartons or totes with suitable, consistent bottoms. Match track spacing, slope and lane width to container size, weight and rolling behavior.

Best for: Fast-moving case and each picking.

Single-sided cantilever

Open-front arms support the loads that do not fit a conventional pallet bay.

How it works

Long goods span multiple arms. The open face permits direct placement and retrieval; stock rotation depends on which bundle is selected.

  1. Lift the bundle level
  2. Set it across both arms
  3. Lift it clear of the arms
  4. Withdraw through the open face

Advantages

  • Clear access to long loads
  • One working face suits perimeter layouts

Considerations

  • Access is needed along the load length
  • Arm positions must suit the load

Load fit

Confirm load length, rigidity, overhang and weight distribution across the supporting arms. Plan handling space for the full bundle.

Best for: Long goods stored from one aisle.

Drive-in pallet rack

How it works

The forklift enters a lane and sets pallets on side support rails, filling the deepest position first. With one working entrance, the last pallet loaded is the first retrieved. A separate drive-through configuration can provide FIFO with two working faces.

  1. Store pallet A at the back
  2. Load pallet B in front
  3. Retrieve pallet B first
  4. Retrieve pallet A from the rear

Advantages

  • Dense storage with fewer aisles
  • Well suited to many pallets per SKU

Considerations

  • Limited access to interior pallets
  • Forklift travel inside the rack
  • Stock lanes typically share one SKU

Load fit

Pallets must suit the rail support arrangement. Match lane clearances, pallet stability and load height to the rack and forklift.

Best for: Large quantities of a small product range.

Pushback pallet rack

Nested carts put multiple pallets behind a single aisle-facing position.

How it works

A new pallet pushes an occupied cart farther up the inclined rails. On retrieval, the remaining load and cart return toward the aisle under gravity. Pallets enter and leave from the same face, so each lane operates last-in, first-out.

  1. Load pallet A onto the top cart
  2. Pallet B pushes A rearward
  3. Retrieve B first
  4. A and its cart return forward

Advantages

  • Dense storage without driving into racks
  • Each lane can hold a different SKU

Considerations

  • No direct access to rear pallets
  • Carts and rails add moving parts
  • Pallet compatibility matters

Load fit

Match pallet footprint, underside and load stability to the carts and fixed supports. Confirm the permitted load range for the specified system.

Best for: Several pallets per SKU, served from one aisle.

Double-sided cantilever

How it works

Arms project from both sides of shared columns. Each face is loaded from its own aisle; stock order is managed through direct access.

  2. Place the first bundle

  • Storage on both sides of the columns
  • Open access to long bundles

Considerations

  • Needs working space on both sides
  • Each side’s loading affects the design

Load fit

Specify load weight and distribution for each face, plus the arms supporting each bundle. Confirm column and base configuration for both sides.

Best for: Long-goods rows with access on either side.

Flexible access

Forklifts place pallets onto beams or decking from the aisle. Each position is individually accessible. FIFO is possible through stock management; the rack does not enforce it.

Design a 120 ft by 80 ft warehouse, 20 ft clear. Fill it with back-to-back selective pallet racking: 8 ft beams, 42 in deep frames, 3 beam levels, 12 ft aisles running east-west. Two dock doors on the south wall.

Cartons enter the higher rear end of an inclined wheel track and advance toward the picking face. Loading and picking use opposite aisles, maintaining first-in, first-out rotation within a lane.

Design a 100 ft by 60 ft pick room, 16 ft clear. Back-to-back selective rack with carton-flow beds on the two lowest levels and reserve pallets above: 8 ft beams, 3 beam levels, 10 ft aisles running east-west. One dock door on the south wall.

Single-sided cantilever

Flexible access

Long goods span multiple arms. The open face permits direct placement and retrieval; stock rotation depends on which bundle is selected.

Design a 100 ft by 60 ft lumber shed, 18 ft clear. Single-sided cantilever rack along the north wall for 12 ft lumber bundles: 4 arm levels, 48 in column spacing, with a 14 ft aisle in front of it. One drive-in door on the east wall.

Design a 120 ft by 80 ft cold-storage warehouse, 24 ft clear. One drive-in pallet racking zone, lanes 4 pallets deep, 3 rail levels, with a 12 ft aisle along the front. Two dock doors on the south wall.
